Calling all Polar Scientists, XSEDE Campus Champions, and HPDC experts.
- What could you do with a team of high-performance computing experts and two dedicated days?
- And how about a chance to learn how to use those computing technologies you've heard about to accelerate your research?
Champions, and HPDC experts
- Want to have fun hacking some Polar Science codes?
- And how about helping to strategise how those involved in using HPDC resources can help serve the Polar Science Community?
Overview
The XSEDE annual conference 2016 offers a great opportunity to attend relevant tutorials on using and obtaining access to XSEDE compute resources and Science specific compute tools. See last year's program for a preview of what you might expect. The Polar RCN will be running a co-located hackathon (flyer) to help Polar scientists maximise their use of available high performance computing resources.
Some challenge ideas: Any repetitive data process that you currently do either manually or in a sequential manner, these might include:
- Data processing or analysis procedures that take hours running on your laptop
- Visualising your data in new ways
- Integrating multiple data sets
- Manipulating large files or many files
Details:
XSEDE will be posting their tutorials soon but check out last year's schedule for an idea of what to expect.
A great deal of preparatory work will be done prior to the event, but kicking off on the Sunday before the conference, teams meet face to face for the first time, some short introductory remarks to the whole group, and teams get hacking! We will also review the availalable Monday tutorials to help participants identify the most useful options and enjoy an evening event. Monday will include hack status reporting to the group as a whole but will largely leave people free to attend tutorials as they need and to keep hacking in spaces provided. Finally, with a last push on the Teusday teams will be able to combine new skills learnt with two days of interaction and coding to culminate in final hack sessions, guided development of future ways forward, and concluding report backs.
